BCR, Banca Transilvania and Raiffeisen, the most profitable banks in 2023, are on the podium and in the top of dividends, followed by BRD and UniCredit More than 4.5 billion lei cumulatively, i.e. almost 1 billion euros, will be given as dividends for shareholders by the five big banks in 2024.

The record profits reported by the big banks in Romania for the year 2023 encouraged them to give substantial dividends to shareholders in 2024. Five of the largest banks in Romania decided to share a part of the profits with the shareholders, giving dividends representing 40% or 50% of last year’s earnings.

Thus, this year as well as in 2023 and 2022, shareholders from Austria, France, Italy, Romania or other countries of the largest banks are rewarded with dividends.

BCR, Banca Transilvania and Raiffeisen Bank, the most profitable banks in 2023, are on the podium and in the top of the highest dividends.

BCR, the second largest bank on the Romanian market by assets, will send to Austria, to the parent bank, the largest dividends, of around 1.2 billion lei, i.e. 50% of the bank’s profit in 2023, of 2 .5 billion lei. The bank claims that the distribution of dividends in 2024 is in line with the capital strategy of the BCR group and that the BNR has also been informed.

Banca Transilvania, the largest bank in Romania by assets, is allocating 1 billion lei for dividends this year, representing 40% of the profit from 2023, thus occupying the 2nd place in the dividend list. The decision related to dividends has the vote of the bank’s shareholders. At the same time, the bank aims to increase the capital by 1.2 billion lei through the issuance of new shares. Banca Transilvania was the leader in the top of profits last year, with a gain of almost 2.5 billion lei.

Raiffeisen Bank, controlled by the Austrian group with the same name, takes the 3rd place on the podium in the dividend list. This year the bank will give dividends of 860.4 million lei, representing 50% of the 2023 profit of 1.72 billion lei.

BRD-SocGen, the fourth largest bank on the local market by assets in 2023, controlled by the French group Société Générale, is sending shareholders this year dividends of 817.1 million lei from the record profit obtained in 2023, of over 1, 6 billion lei, i.e. 50%. This decision was approved by the shareholders.

The shareholders of UniCredit Bank Romania, a credit institution controlled by the Italian group with the same name, decided in the Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (AGOA) in April that the Romanian bank should send in 2024 to the parent group in Italy and to the other shareholders cumulative dividends of 647 million lei from the profit of over 1.29 billion lei from the year 2023, i.e. 50% of the gain.

The entire Romanian banking system, consisting of 32 banks, ended 2023 with a record profit of almost 14 billion lei, 34% above the profit reported for 2022. Profits for most of the top 10 banks increased last year with individual percentages ranging from between 14% and 50%.

The three most profitable large banks in 2023 were Banca Transilvania, BCR and Raiffeisen Bank, with cumulative earnings of around 6.7 billion lei, i.e. around 50% of the total earnings of the banking system.
