Asked if it is something offensive to be Moldovan, Ciolacu replied: “We are all made in Romania. You know as well as I do that that was a joke, really failed. I’m sorry and that was a failed joke. You know that Firea and I, after 3 days of marathon, you start to relax and want to change something. I’m Moldovan what do you have? My mother is from Tecuci, my father is from Oltenia, a combination”.

Ciolacu previously explained that the statement he made on Thursday in Timisoara, when he said that “Buzăul is not in Moldova and please do not offend me”, that “there was nothing pejorative” and said that he apologizes “if anyone was offended”.

“First of all I am Romanian. I love my country and I believe in God. I am a Moldavian just as I am a Transylvanian, Banatian, Oltean or Bukovinian. My mother was from Tecuci. So far be it from me to offend anyone. I see that a joke I made in Timişoara was interpreted and some are trying to speculate politically. It was nothing pejorative. If someone felt offended, I apologize, that’s not what I wanted”, Marcel Ciolacu wrote on Facebook on Friday.

He also said that “the respect for Moldova can be seen in the large infrastructure projects that we have been doing here in recent years, precisely to recover the gaps compared to the other regions of the country”.

“The real offense is when you put forward candidates like a tin thief and a criminal mayor from an organized crime group and expect people to vote for them. PS: I always felt a lot of warmth when I was in Moldova. And I will return every time with the same respect and appreciation”, added Ciolacu.
