A new earthquake with the epicenter in Gorj took place on April 28, 2024, on Palm Sunday.

According to the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP), on April 28, 2024, at 20:02:26 (Romanian local time), a weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 ml occurred in Oltenia Gorj, at a depth of 15.0 km.

The earthquake occurred near the following cities: 17 km W of Targu Jiu, 60 km NE of Drobeta-Turnu Severin, 74 km S of Hunedoara, 88 km S of Deva, 95 km E of Resita

Last year, 4,900 earthquakes occurred in our country. Most of them, over 4,000, took place in Gorj county, according to data from the National Institute for Earth Physics.​

Around 3,200 homes were affected and needed repairs, and the damages paid to those who had insurance against disasters reached 6 and a half million euros. And this, only in Arad and Gorj.

Basically, compulsory insurance for floods, earthquakes and landslides has proven to be the safest and fastest way to save the family budget in a disaster situation.

According to the National Institute for Earth Physics, of the more than 4,900 earthquakes that shook Romania last year, almost 4,200 occurred only in Gorj county. There, 3,200 homes were damaged and needed repairs.

Damages paid to those who took out insurance policies against disasters in time amounted to 6.5 million euros, only in Gorj and Arad counties. Compulsory insurance for floods, earthquakes and landslides has proven to be the safest and fastest way to save the family budget in a disaster situation.

In February, last year, in Gorj county, 960 earthquakes occurred in just ten days, the strongest having a magnitude of 5.7 degrees. It was something neither residents nor seismologists had seen before.

The shock was immense for those who found themselves unable to live in the houses destroyed by the earthquakes and have no money for repairs.

Over 6.5 million euros, damages paid

​In Arcani commune from Gorj, over 250 houses were affected. Among them, the home of a 94-year-old man whose son took care to secure it ahead of time.

“On the occasion of the earthquake in Gorj, about 3,200 homes were damaged and were repaired with the insurance money. This in the conditions that in Gorj county only 9% of homes were insured at the time of the earthquake. You realize, in reality, how many houses were damaged for which there is no compensation,” said Cosmin Tudor, deputy general director of PAID.

Last year, upon returning from vacation, Gorj Antena 3 CNN correspondent Gabriela Mladin found the walls of her house cracked after the earthquakes.
