Mircea Fechet, Minister of the Environment, information about Saharan dust in Romania

Another cloud of Saharan dust has arrived in Romania. The phenomenon is more persistent in areas where it has rained. Since the early hours of the morning, a layer of fine sand has settled on cars and streets. And in Constanța and Tulcea, people found their cars covered with a reddish layer. Forecasters say the particle-laden air mass will persist through the early part of today and then move northeast.

In the last months, there were several days when the dust of Saharan origin also reached Constanța. But Wednesday morning was the most intense episode, covering the cars with a thick layer of reddish dust.

The Minister of the Environment, Mircea Fechet, came up with details about this Saharan dust cloud.

“I tell the Romanians not to worry because such phenomena occur constantly. In fact, just three weeks ago we had a similar episode. The difference from what happened in the past days is that it did not rained and in the absence of precipitation, the cloud of dust passed on or was also breathed in by Romanian citizens, as well as the citizens of the other states that were affected by this situation.

Romanians must know that the National Air Quality Monitoring Network is working, that we monitor both PM 2.5 and PM-10 suspensions, as well as other pollutants in real time, and whenever it is necessary to alert the population, we do so. This was not the case now, and I want to emphasize this very clearly. It was just fake news. I took it as a joke. I also saw some images of the sums of money collected by car washes,” said Mircea Fechet on Antena 3.
