The rare species of bird that was spotted for the first time, this year, in Romania

Recently, in the forests of Romania, one of the rarest bird species was spotted. Such an occurrence is truly special because this rare and precious bird.

The caprimulgu, the subject of the discussion, is a bird that few have the privilege of observing. This time, the lucky one who had this chance is from Harghita. Caprimulgul made its appearance this very month, on April 11.

The caprimulgu, a fascinating bird also known as a leech, is extremely active at night and is often mistaken for a cuckoo due to their similarity in waist size.

Although the name of this bird may seem strange, it hides an extremely captivating story. For centuries, legend has it that the bird flies at night and feeds on goats’ milk. This legend is also the source of its interesting name.

A bird almost impossible to spot

The caprimulgu is distinguished by its distinctive plumage, and its large eyes give it remarkable vision in the dark. But, apart from its physical appearance, another aspect makes this bird species unique.

Few people know, but caprimulgu is almost invisible to the ordinary eye, for two reasons. The first and perhaps most significant is its coloring. The tonalities of its plumage closely mimic the bark of trees, making it nearly impossible to spot in its natural environment.

Another special aspect is the structure of the feathers. In contrast to other birds, the caprimulgu has an extremely soft plumage, so its flight is completely noiseless.

Even though its plumage is silent in flight, its song is easily recognizable. It is often heard in early summer, both in the morning and in the evening. Its song is not just an ordinary sound, but also serves as a way to protect its territory.

The caprimulgu is a solitary bird, and during migration, it travels in extremely small flocks. Usually, this bird remains faithful to its partner throughout its life.
