Mircea Geoană, potential candidate for the presidency, claims that Romania is led by an “increasingly incompetent” political generation and that politicians who do not have elementary knowledge end up in positions on which the fate of millions of people depends.

“The country was and is led by an increasingly incompetent political generation and emptied of the feeling of true love for the country. We have seen for years how too many politicians struggle between greed and helplessness. There are many politicians who don’t know economics, don’t know legislation, have practically no proven qualification and yet they lead governments, ministries, agencies and state companies.

Politicians who have learned almost nothing in their lives, have no basic knowledge and, despite all this, end up in positions on which the fate of millions of Romanians depends.

It has become almost unimaginable that a Romanian minister or prime minister could speak a foreign language. This at a time when, if a leader does not even speak English, he condemns his nation to isolation.

And when these leaders express themselves in Romanian, you sometimes have the feeling that the class teacher is speaking to you“, declared Mircea Geoană, during the debate “From the Heart of Romania to the Heart of Europe”, organized in Alba Iulia by the Movement “Romania Renaşte!”.

According to Geoană, the result of this counter-selection is the blockage and impoverishment of the country.

“Romania lies somewhere on the periphery of the European Union, weighed down by weak economic indicators, increasing debts, emptied of people and labor force, frustrated and lacking in international relevance, which we richly deserve.

Because our political system is so flawed and the Romanian state is so dysfunctional, it cannot be otherwise than dysfunctional, as long as the political system does not do its duty. This is the real reason why we are last in the vast majority of European rankings”, said Geoană.

He mentioned that there are also many politicians and officials of the Romanian state who are competent, good patriots and who try to do their duty.

“But too many of them are put aside, fearful or distant from a political oligarchy whose gripes are closer to the phanariot temper than to the meritocracy that defines any performing system, modern in this world. Because of this oligarchy, a Romania born of union and capable of great things is today terribly divided and continues to struggle undeservedly on the periphery of Europe”, claimed Mircea Geoană.

Romania of rich cities and poor Romania

He opined that, on the same territory, there are two separate countries: the Romania of the rich cities and the poor Romania.

“Eurostat tells us that eight large cities of the country produce 80% of the national GDP, and the rest of the country the rest. (…) The gross inequality between the group of large cities, which we must continue to support to develop, and the rest of the country shows a distribution of wealth according to medieval schemes, not according to modern methods.

With the money concentrated disproportionately on the territories of the urban elite and with the vast majority of the population abandoned to the mercy of poverty. A poverty that deepens with the inability of governments to produce programs and opportunities, investments and jobs, elsewhere than in fiefdoms or home businesses”, declared Mircea Geoană.

He also claimed that “the huge European resources allocated to Romania were either lost due to the incompetence of some national authorities, who were not able to spend this money, after all for free, or were distributed unequally, because certain parts of the country had good luck to the householders”, and other parts had “incompetence and corruption”.
