The University of Bucharest (UB) has a new “student assessment and grading” regulation. If in a subject the number of students who failed is greater than 66% of the total of those who passed the assessment, then the papers will be analyzed to determine how the situation was reached. The same will happen if the marks between 9 and 10 will exceed 75% of the total or if they will be less than 5% of the number of students who took the exam.

The new regulation was published this week on the University’s website, notes Edupedu.ro, which initially wrote about the new changes. Article 20 of the regulation provides:

  • (1) At the end of the academic year, the management of the departments must analyze the distribution of grades for each discipline for university undergraduate studies and, only in cases where students report, for university master’s studies.
  • (2) If the share of students who did not pass the respective discipline from the total number of students who participated in the final assessment is greater than 66%, the department council together with the subject holder analyzes the subject file, course support and bibliography, exam subjects and the correction scale, determines the causes that determined this situation and proposes the necessary measures. In these exceptional cases, the director of the department presents the analysis carried out in the faculty council, which is later forwarded to the board of administration.
  • (3) The department councils calculate (after all the sessions of the academic year) the share of grades 9 and 10 from the total number of passed students. If this share is less than 5% of the total, respectively, greater than 75% of the total the causes that determined this situation and the necessary measures are analyzed.

The regulation does not specify whether sanctions will be granted or what will happen next. It is only stated that “necessary measures” will be taken.

UB has 19 faculties, where almost 34,000 students are enrolled (bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate).
