There are also flowers that are protected by law

Spring brings with it nature’s wonderful blooms, and it’s important to protect the wildflower species we encounter on our travels.

In March, we can admire the flowering of variegated tulips. A rare species that can only be found in one place in Romania. More precisely in the Mehedinți Plateau Geopark. This flower, also known as the “chess plant”, only lasts up to 14 days. And it does not exceed the size of 20 centimeters.

The Romanian peony, included in the list of protected plants before the Second World War, can be found in the Oltenia region and in Dobrogea. It is distinguished from the garden peony by the smaller number of petals and the more deeply cut leaves.

The cornflower, also known as edelweiss, grows in the Carpathian Mountains, on the steep and sunny slopes.

Romania’s flora also includes rare species of orchids. Among them are the bull’s blood and the lady’s slipper. The latter has been protected by law since 1938. It can be found in forests on mountain coasts and calcareous terrain.

It is important to be aware of the importance of protecting these species of flowers and not to tear or destroy them!

The rare species of flowers in Romania and their names are:

  • Fritillaria meleagris (Fritillaria meleagris)
  • Romanian peony (Paeonia Peregrina var. Romanica)
  • Cornflower (Leontopodium alpinum)
  • Lady’s slipper (Cypripedium calceolus)
