Specialists from the National Directorate of Cyber Security (DNSC) in Romania have issued a warning about a new method of fraud targeting citizens via the telephone.
This scheme involves the use of a technique known as “spoofing”, where the attackers manipulate the display of the phone number to make it appear that the call is from an official institution, according to Playtech.
In these calls, criminals pose as DNSC employees and use fictitious names to gain the trust of victims. They claim to want to help victims recover lost sums of money and ask for sensitive personal information such as full name, IBAN and the last six digits of the CNP.
DNSC warnings
DNSC has clarified that it will never initiate calls to users to promise recovery of lost amounts, nor will it ask for sensitive personal information over the phone. The institution stressed the importance of verifying the authenticity of any call received from an authority or institution, especially when personal data is requested.
Precautions recommended by experts
To prevent falling into these traps, DNSC recommends:
-Checking the authenticity of calls through a separate communication channel.
-Reporting suspicious calls to impersonated institutions.
– Notify the bank immediately if the card data has been provided.
-Filing a complaint with the Police and notifying the DNSC in case of confirmed fraud.
-Sharing information about these fraud attempts to raise awareness.
