A project for free microchipping and sterilization of up to 10,000 dogs of common breed with owner will be debated in Monday’s meeting, by the municipal councilors of the Capital.

The program is to be implemented by the Authority for the Supervision and Protection of Animals and aims at identification by microchip, registration in the Record Register of Dogs with Owners – RECS and free sterilization.

The program will be applied on a first-come, first-served basis.

According to the attached documents, free sterilization programs were also carried out in the Capital through ASPA: in 2018 (approximately 2,800 sterilized animals), 2019 (approximately 6,500 animals), between November 2021 – April 2022 (approximately 7,000 animals); between November 2022 – April 2024 (approximately 5,000 dogs and 2,000 cats). Thus, between October 2018 and April 2024, approximately 23,300 animals were sterilized free of charge, including 10,000 dogs.

In the case of dogs, identification by microchip and their registration in RECS, a register managed by the College of Veterinarians, is mandatory by law.

Microchip identification services and RECS registration are medical documents preceding the sterilization service and can be performed on the same day, by the same medical unit.

Microchip identification and RECS registration prevent abandonment and aim to make owners responsible, paying attention to the animal’s health (vaccination, deworming), the project states.
