In an exclusive interview for Antena 3 CNN, conducted by Mihai Gâdea in Washington DC, Mircea Geoană, the deputy general secretary of the North Atlantic Alliance, was asked if he had made a decision regarding his candidacy for the presidential elections.
“We haven’t made a final decision yet. It is obvious that I must do my duty at NATO until the last day of my mandate, and this is part of my professional ethics and my obligations as a Romanian political leader and at the level of the North Atlantic Alliance.
But seeing what’s happening in the country and outside the country, I’m getting closer to a decision, but that doesn’t mean I’m making an announcement now, that’s not the case. There are still a few weeks until the local elections, there are 2-3 months until the NATO Summit in Washington, and I really, really want to contribute to a successful summit. After that we will obviously see what the future holds and what we have to do.
I am extremely flattered and flattered that – at least from the polls – people have a good opinion of me. To run for the presidency of Romania is a massive, important decision that involves responsibility. I have never run away from responsibility in my life, at this moment I am closer to a decision, but the final decision, with subject and predicate, I will announce publicly and we will treat it as such”, he said, on Antena 3 CNN, Mircea Geoană, Deputy Secretary General of NATO.
