The independent candidate for mayor of Sibiu, Alexandru Găvozdea, proposes the organization of at least three public debates between candidates in the electoral campaign of the June local elections. During a press conference, he said that there is a need for “a radical change in the way election campaigns and city administration are conducted.”

Găvozdea spoke at the conference about the low level of trust in political parties, at the national level, drawing a parallel with politics in ancient Greece: “Politics as thought by the ancient Greeks means discussions, debates.” In this sense, he appealed to the political parties that announced their candidates for the leadership of the City Hall to debate face to face the solutions they have for the city.

He also urged them “not to spend the citizens’ money on attacks against the opponents”: “It would be splendid if they invited European urban planners who would share their expertise with us.”

Therefore, Alexandru Găvozdea believes that the organization of three public debates between the candidates would be sufficient in the election campaign for the Sibiu City Hall, so that the people of Sibiu can make an impression about them, watching them live. He believes that the meeting should take place in public places, accessible and announced in advance, to allow the people of Sibiu to schedule their participation and ask questions directly to the candidates. Găvozdea invited the media “to be the referees of these debates”, emphasizing the importance of transparency and dialogue in the electoral process.

Regarding the potential venues for these debates, Găvozdea mentioned that he would prefer a theater such as the “Radu Stanca” National Theater or the Gong Theater, due to their capacity and accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

In the context of his participation in the elections, Găvozdea indicated that he is also considering a candidacy for the local council, emphasizing that he will not form a list for potential future councilors, but will work with the members of his association and platform to contribute to public service. We remind you that he created the Sibiu 2024 Platform a few months before announcing his candidacy for the City Hall.

“We have to bring Sibiu into the century. XXI, but without forgetting its history and values (…) The campaign should be about this. There have never been any debates in Sibiu. Everyone goes their own way. People don’t get a chance to see the candidates face to face. I propose that we become more democratic. Let’s bring clarity, let’s put the solutions for the city in the foreground (…) When the games are done, it’s no longer democracy. Let’s make the electoral campaign the moment of rebirth of Sibiu”, is the summary of the statements made by Alexandru Găvozdea in today’s press conference.

He considers the candidacy of the current mayor, Astrid Fodor, “the main candidate with the best chances”: “Of course, that’s where I get the most attention and interest.”

The Counseling Tower also asked the views of the other candidates regarding the advisability of holding public debates in this year’s campaign, as well as whether they would participate in them if they were to be held.
