--
Two 7th grade students, who participated in the AcadNet Applied Informatics Olympiad, were excluded by the Ministry of Education from the national stage of the competition and “let” participate only as guests, according to Edupedu.ro sources. The students entered the competition on the instructions of the school inspectorates, which centralized the lists of participants, they participated in the local and county stage, where they ranked in the top 15 in the country, but they will not be able to officially participate in the competition.
  • UPDATE 15:00 Following the publication of the article, the students’ parents confirmed to Edupedu.ro that the students were officially accepted into the competition.

According to our information, in the initial results one of the two students is among the first 6 students out of 146 participants in the “Calculators 9-10” section. After displaying the final results, which came after the school inspectorates validated the scores of the participants, the student is mentioned that he can participate outside the competition. His or her parents were not given any explanation about the exclusion of the student from the Olympiad, after he was allowed by the School Inspectorate to participate in the two phases and appears in the centralizer of the participants at the county stage, document obtained by Edupedu.ro .

According to the competition regulations in force on the date of the student’s enrollment in the competition, from the competition website, the Olympiad is open to students from grades VII-XII. According to the regulation approved by the Ministry of Education on February 28, three weeks after the local phase of the Olympiad, updated for this school year’s edition of the AcadNet Applied Informatics Olympiad, only students from grades IX-XII are expected to be potential participants.

Registrations for the Olympiad were made until January 26, 2024 based on the regulations on the competition website, once through the school teachers with the validation of the specialized school inspectors and once individually, on the platform, where the 7th grade students- a have ticked the lowest level of study that they would be allowed to participate in under these conditions, namely the 9th grade.

According to the Edupedu.ro information, the regulations on the competition website were used by students, teachers and school inspectorates for registration, with VII-VIII graders being able to participate on February 3 in the local stage based on it. At the same time, it would also be the regulation in the version that the AcadNet organizers sent for approval to the Ministry of Education.

In parallel, in the version approved by the Ministry of Education, the institution would have excluded them without consulting and notifying the other organizers, according to Edupedu.ro sources – Politehnica University of Bucharest – Faculty of Automation and Computers, Union of Informatics Teachers from Romania (UPIR) and a computer training company.

The situation was reported to the editorial office after a week ago we reported the case of two 7th and 8th grade students, ranked in the first 4 at the Cyber Security Olympiad for high school, who were disqualified from the podium by the School Inspectorate of the Municipality of Bucharest because they are not yet in the class provided by the regulation. As in this case, the organizers decided to leave them at the national stage, but outside the competition.

According to our sources, the measure to exclude students from the Olympiad, in addition to the recently reported situation of students from the Cyber Security Olympiad, is part of the chain of measures that prevent students from participating in competitions in higher classes. At the beginning of the month, all primary school students were cut by the Ministry of Education from the county school Olympics through messages sent to the inspectors, after they had been able to participate in recent years. Most students had already passed the school and local stages.

The measure, say some teachers on condition of anonymity, is part of “an effort by the Ministry of Education to prevent young talents from performing. Regardless of the class they are in, especially if the regulations do not prohibit, and in this case it is one of the good exceptions that allows this flexibility, students cannot be excluded from the competition, once they have been able to register and are in the provisions of the regulation”.

Almost two months ago, on February 1, the Ministry of Education was sanctioned by the Council for Combating Discrimination because a 7th grade student was not allowed to participate in the 10th grade Latin Olympiad. CNCD recommended to the Ministry to amend the regulations for participation in the Olympics and to allow “the participation of students from lower classes in the Olympics organized for students from higher classes” – details here.
