Dan Ilie Morega, former prefect of Gorj, remains under house arrest, the Bucharest Court decided on Monday. He has the obligation not to leave the house without the permission of the prosecutors, in the case in which he is under criminal investigation after he was caught driving without a license and caused a car accident.

Initially, the prosecutors placed Morega under judicial control, then they requested in court to replace this measure with preventive arrest, but the 1st District Court decided on March 23 that the former prefect should be under house arrest, with the obligation to wear a electronic surveillance bracelet.

Prosecutors appealed the decision of the first court, but their appeal was rejected on Monday by the Bucharest Court, which only changed the address where the former prefect is under house arrest, reports Agerpres.

“Rejects, as unfounded, the appeal filed by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the 1st District Court of Bucharest against the conclusion dated 23.03.2024 of the judge of rights and freedoms of the 1st District Court of Bucharest, issued in file no. 8532/299/2024. In on the basis of article 4251 paragraph 7 point 2 letter of the Civil Code admits, in part, the appeal filed by the defendant Morega Dan Ilie against the conclusion of 23.03.2024, of the judge of rights and freedoms within the District Court of Bucharest 1, pronounced in file no. 8532/299/2024 and in retrial: Based on art. 221 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code imposes on the defendant the obligation not to leave the residence in Or. (…) without the permission of the judicial body that ordered the measure or in front of which find out the cause. Definitive”the Bucharest Court shows.

Dan Ilie Morega is under criminal investigation for committing the crime of driving a vehicle without a driver’s license.

On March 10, the local press published a photo of the former prefect, next to his all-terrain vehicle and a crew of gendarmes, while he had his driver’s license revoked for medical reasons, for which the prosecutors opened a criminal case in this case.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, on March 10, between 12:00 and 13:00, Dan Ilie Morega drove a vehicle on public roads, being identified around 12:00 on the road. Pavel D. Kiseleff, where he stopped the vehicle for approximately 1 – 2 minutes in front of the Russian Embassy at no. 6, after which he continued his journey to Piaţa Victoriei, and at around 12:46 he drove down Bd. Lascăr Catargiu to Piaţa Romană. In Piaţa Romană, he turned left onto Bd. Dacia, where he stopped in front of a hotel until 1:00 p.m., continuing on Bd. Dacia towards Calea Victoriei.

The research showed that on February 6, 2024, by order of the head of the Gorj Road Service, Dan Ilie Morega’s driver’s license was revoked for medical reasons.

The prosecutors in the capital placed Morega, on March 10, under judicial control and forbade him to drive a car on public roads, but on March 21 he caused an accident in Târgu Jiu, resulting in material damage .
