“We are considering building a new home”

--

Rector Sorin Radu spoke on Thursday, during a press conference in which he presented the report for the year 2023, about the pluses, minuses of Lucian Blaga University and the challenges it is currently facing.

Although two student dormitories have been modernized, there is still not enough accommodation for students. The University management wants to build a new student dormitory in the future to compensate for the lack of accommodation for students who choose Sibiu.

Dormitories 6 and 7 have been modernized, but the number of accommodation places has decreased as the rooms have become two people, not four as it was before the modernisation. “In terms of infrastructure, I think that’s where the things are most visible to someone outside the university. We went through a process of improving the infrastructure at the level of all faculties, with different sizes. There are faculties where the investments were deeper – laboratories, lecture halls, in others less because we had to prioritize. Some major investments are obvious: dormitories 6 and 7, we created a new infrastructure, we completed the Rusciori farm where the students now work. We completed the works on the extension of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, the building on Banatului street. There we still have the process of purchasing some equipment, which unfortunately did not materialize, but the work is completed, the students have already moved there. There are two infrastructure works that created enough emotions for us, but we managed to complete them”, said the rector of ULBS University, Sorin Radu.

Currently, the 8 dormitories in Sibiu have places for 1,700 students. “We currently educate around 10,000 students. We offer accommodation in all 8 dormitories for approximately 1700 students. I mention that we decreased the accommodation capacity because when we chose to renovate the dormitories we did not go for four-person rooms, but for two-person rooms and then we lost more than 200 accommodation places because we valued the quality of these services . At the time of the pandemic, I gave up a home that I was managing, but it had no modernization horizon. I mean the dormitory in Vasile Aron. As a result, the percentage of students who benefit from accommodation is not very many. I confess that we have a deficit here”, said the chancellor of Lucian Blaga University, Sorin Radu.

The need for a new dormitory for students

Sibiu would still need at least one dormitory for students, but until now there has not been an opportune moment, or a financing line. “We started very realistically from the financing lines. As long as we did not identify a line of financing for the construction of a new home, we did not raise this issue. To build something you also need a land. In the meantime, it has been clarified that we have land, so we can consider building a new home as long as a financing line is created. A new construction in this area is not easy to sustain financially. So far no lines have appeared, that’s why we focused on improving the conditions”, explained the rector.
