The actor Jerry Seinfeld, the protagonist of the TV series “Seinfeld”, has finally become a director and will soon attend the premiere of his debut feature film, entitled “Unfrosted”, reports Variety magazine.

Produced by Netflix, this all-star comedy is a fictional account of the creation of Pop-Tarts. In an interview with GQ magazine, Jerry Seinfeld reflected on his experience breaking into film for the first time and so late in his career.

“It was something totally new for me. I thought I had already done some interesting stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work. They are so serious! They have no idea that the movie industry is over. They have no idea,” he said.

Invited to develop this idea on a more serious note, Jerry Seinfeld continued thus: “Film no longer occupies the top of the social and cultural hierarchy that it occupied for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We were all talking about him. We mentioned lines and scenes that we liked. Now we’re going through a kind of water hose jet, just trying to see through it.”

So what, if anything, replaced film? “Depression? The state of indisposition? I would say confusion. Disorientation has replaced the film industry,” he replied. “Everybody I know in showbiz, every day, they’re like, ‘What’s going on? How do you manage to do this? What should we do now?”

“I’ve done enough things that I now have an asset of mine that’s more valuable than it’s ever been,” said Jerry Seinfeld, speaking about his career outside the film industry, which is more confusing. “Stand-up is like being a carpenter and everyone needs a guy who knows wood… There are trees everywhere, but to make a beautiful table, it’s not that easy. So, the metaphor is that if you have a good craft and a good craftsmanship, you are somewhat impenetrable to the whims of the industry”.

“Audiences are turning to stand-up in large numbers now because it’s something that can’t be faked,” he added. “It’s like a diving platform. You can say you’re a platform diver, but in two seconds we can tell if you are or not. That’s what people like about stand-up. They can trust him. Everything else is false.”

Jerry Seinfeld recently appeared on the latest episode of Larry David’s HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm. The two artists were co-creators of the legendary sitcom “Seinfeld” and reunited in the series finale of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to comment on the controversial ending of their popular sitcom, in which the main characters ended up in prison. A lot of people have criticized Jerry Seinfeld over the years for how “Seinfeld” ended, and he admitted in an interview with GQ that the ending bothered him “a little bit” all these years .

“I don’t believe in regrets. It’s arrogant to think you could have done something different. You can not. That’s why you did what you did. But Jeff Schaffer and Larry and I were sitting around talking about TV show endings that we thought were great. I think ‘Mad Men’ was the best. A lot of people like the one from ‘Bob Newhart’. The one of the ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ series was OK. ‘Mad Men’ was the best TV finale I’ve ever seen. So satisfying. So funny. And they told me they sat and watched the ‘Seinfeld’ finale, trying to figure out what went wrong. And obviously it was about the final scene, which left the protagonists in the prison cell,” revealed Jerry Seinfeld.

The film “Unfrosted” will be broadcast on the Netflix streaming platform starting May 3.
