Bucharest, a city with a rich history and a special charm, has always been known for its picturesque pubs and their lively atmosphere. Among these magical places is the legendary “Red Snake”, a bodega that became the epicenter of Bucharest bohemia after the Revolution.

Located at the intersection of Eminescu Street and Galați Street, the “Red Snake” has been the witness of lively evenings and fascinating stories.

Great actors made their mark here, after the Revolution

Here, famous names from the artistic world such as Ștefan Iordache, Gheorghe Dinića, Nelu Ploieșteanu or Ștefan Bănică spent hours sharing their passion for art and entertainment.

The patron of the pub, known as nea Dan, wanted to create a bohemian sanctuary in the heart of Bucharest.

In an interview more than three decades ago, nea Dan revealed that the essence of the place was sincerity and authenticity, turning the “Red Snake” into a haven for creative souls and those looking for a place to feel at home .

Over the years, “Red Snake” has become more than just a bodega. It was a meeting place for artists, writers, actors and other personalities of the cultural world. Here ideas were born, experiences were shared and an atmosphere full of energy and inspiration was created.

The decor at the “Red Snake”, truly unique in the Capital

One of the things that made the Red Snake pub so special was its distinctive decor. The red walls of the 19 square meter room were decorated with paintings depicting prominent figures from the history of communism, bringing a touch of irony and humor to this lively place.

But not only the decor and the bohemian atmosphere have made the “Red Snake” a place of legends. Its innovative cuisine and rigorous selection of customers have added charm to this place.

Even though the menu was modest, customers could enjoy fresh dishes prepared at the nearby butcher, bringing an extra originality to the experience of this place.

But, like any legend, the story of the “Red Snake” also had its difficult moments. In an unfortunate episode, the bodega was vandalized by members of an underworld group, and nea Dan had to intervene to restore order.

However, the patron maintained his integrity and continued to provide a haven for all who sought a place to feel free and inspired. Finally, in 2001, the building that housed the “Red Snake” was repossessed, and nea Dan had to move.

Although many wanted the bodega to continue its activity elsewhere, nea Dan decided to permanently close “Sharpele Roșu”, thus putting an end to an unforgettable story from the bohemian history of Bucharest.

Therefore, the “Red Snake” pub remains in the memory of those who had the privilege of stepping into this truly unique oasis. Although its doors have closed, its memory and charm will live on through stories.
