Many of the Ukrainians handed over by Moscow to Kiev in an important exchange of prisoners of war were “brutally tortured” in captivity, accuses a high-ranking Ukrainian official, Kirilo Budanov, reports AFP.

“Many of them were brutally tortured”, Kirilo Budanov, in charge of classified information at the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, denounced in a press conference on Thursday, without presenting details about the nature of these alleged tortures.

Among them there are “people whose physical condition is more or less normal, apart from chronic malnutrition, due to the bad conditions of detention”, he accuses, writes news.ro.

These prisoners were detained in several places in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian troops, but also in Russia, says Kirilo Budanov, who participated in the organization of this exchange of prisoners.

“Absolutely all” the Ukrainians released in exchange of prisoners “need psychological rehabilitation”, declares, for his part, the Ukrainian Minister of the Interior, Denis Monastîrski.

Ukraine and Russia on Wednesday carried out the largest exchange of military prisoners since the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February.

Kyiv received ten foreigners and 205 Ukrainians – including the former defense chiefs from the Azovstal Steel Works, from the city of Mariupol, a symbol of resistance to the Russian invasion.

Moscow obtained the release of 55 Russians and a former Ukrainian deputy, Viktor Medvendciuk, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
