The statement was made in an interview given to the Russian blogger Iuriy Dud, taken over by the publication European Pravda.
“We will do everything to prevent this (a possible Russian attack on the Republic of Moldova – no), including our European integration plan. First of all, it is a plan to ensure security, because the EU is a peace project,” Maia Sandu said in the interview.
“According to the Constitution, we must do everything to maintain peace and protect our citizens. We have an army. We have a defense sector and we make these investments. But we really hope that this war will end soon and that we will be able to invest in the economy and in other sectors, and we will not be in a situation where we will be forced to invest in defense,” she added, according to the cited source.
Being asked if the Republic of Moldova could face an invasion from Russia, Maia Sandu pointed out that it will act as such: “We will certainly defend our country”, she answered.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the leadership in Chisinau faced several pressures from the Kremlin regime, but these actions were rejected.
In April, the Institute for the Study of War (Institute for the Study of War – ISW) announced, in a report, that Russia plans to destabilize the leadership in Chisinau and distance it from the process of joining the European bloc. At the same time, the ISW emphasized, in the same report, that Russia will continue to consider that some states are not fully sovereign – in this situation, Moldova being considered as part -, in order to justify its eventual attacks as legitimate.
