“I don’t really understand the meaning of this ban. From my point of view, parents can take care of this”, claims a woman from Nice.
The mayor of Nice, however, thinks otherwise. From 1 May it imposed new rules banning children under 13 from walking unaccompanied between 11pm and 6am. The law will apply until the end of the summer for the central area of the metropolis and several districts.
The main argument is the increase in juvenile delinquency. In one of Nice’s notorious neighborhoods, 52% of people arrested in drug-trafficking operations were under the age of 18.
“At 13 you are a child. You don’t have discernment, you don’t think much when you’re 13. You don’t understand the risks, you don’t anticipate the danger like an adult”, claims a local.
“I think it’s a good idea. From an hour later… after all, I didn’t get caught outside at midnight when I was 13 years old,” says another local.
Similar bans are applied in other French cities, and the interior minister said in April that he would agree to the implementation of these rules at the national level.
