Khan first won the mayoralty for Labor in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021, and has now secured a third term with 43.8% of the vote, defeating Tory challenger Susan Hall. which obtained only 32.6%, it reveals political and Sky News.

The incumbent mayor of London improved his 2021 margin of victory over the Tories. The victory was achieved despite last-minute jitters from Labour, who believed Hall could edge out Khan because of a higher-than-expected turnout in parts of London more likely to support her.

The mayor of London had described the battle as a “close race between two horses” when opinion polls predicted he had a 25-point lead over his Tory rival.

The Guardian notes that the Conservative Party is facing one of its worst local election results in 40 years. Labor has made significant gains in England and Wales in key battlegrounds it needs to secure victory in the general election.

Sadiq Khan was previously a Labor MP and minister, and will now be the UK capital’s longest-serving mayor.
