The US accuses Russia of using chemical weapons prohibited by the laws of war on the Ukrainian front.

The State Department believes that Russia used a chemical agent, chloropicrin, in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

In agriculture it is used as a disinfectant. Chloropicrin is injected into the soil, before a crop is planted, to treat the soil.

This while at the military level, now prohibited, it is an irritant with the effect of tear gas that can affect the lungs, eyes and skin.
