The Russian Defense Ministry did not say where the missiles were shot down, but the Russian-backed governor of Crimea says they were shot down over the peninsula.
“Ten Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, six ATACMS tactical missiles made by the United States and two Hammer guided bombs made by France were shot down by air defense,” the Russian ministry announced.
Sergei Aksionov, the Russian-backed governor of Crimea, claims the ATACMS missiles were shot down over the peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. He posted a photo on Telegram of what he said were unexploded ATACMS missile submunitions, without specifying how many missiles were shot down.
Medium-range ATACMS missiles were supplied to Ukraine last September. Washington also secretly sent the long-range missiles to Kiev as part of a $300 million military aid package approved by US President Joe Biden on March 12, a US official said last week.
