The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, said on Tuesday, in the USA, that Ukraine needs anti-aircraft defense systems and that there was an intense discussion about who can provide them, and Romania was also asked. “There is a need for anti-aircraft defense systems in Ukraine, advanced systems and in recent weeks there has been quite an intense discussion about who can provide them. Romania has such systems and then we were also asked”, declared Iohannis.
The president also added that “it is unacceptable for Romania to remain without anti-aircraft defense”.
“And Biden brought this up, and I said that I am open to discussing such matters, which means that I will have to discuss at home, in the CSAT, let’s see how we can raise the issue, what we can offer and what we can receive in instead, because it is unacceptable for Romania to remain without anti-aircraft defense. I think we will find a solution. It’s just one Patriot system. One is functional, which will remain in Romania, the others are in advanced phases of operationalization, and it was about this one,” Iohannis said.
The head of state also explained that “Romania is doing extremely well with the decision of 2.5% of GDP for defense”.
“There are many allies who are very far from even 2%. As tensions rise, the discussion will resume and it will be necessary, and this is what I said in the discussion with President Biden, we have to be very clear and see that our defense industries have to increase production, otherwise we cannot we are dealing with this situation”, concluded Klaus Iohannis.
