More than 30 Ukrainian recruits died while trying to illegally cross the border to avoid mobilization, Andriy Demchenko told Ukrinform.
According to the official, some men pay “large sums” of money to groups who promise to smuggle them across the border, according to Sky News. Some fugitives drowned in rivers or got lost in the mountains.
“In total, since the beginning of the invasion, about 30 people have died trying to cross the border illegally,” Demchenko said.
Such attempts are registered “every day”, stated the spokesperson of the State Border Service. Most of the time, Ukrainians try to reach western countries and cross Ukraine’s borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova and Romania.
