A Dutch woman with depression will be euthanized because she “can’t cope anymore”. He is only 28 years old

A 28-year-old Dutch woman, physically healthy, decided to be euthanized, because – she says – she can no longer fight depression, autism and Borderline disorder.

Zoraya ter Beek, who lives in a small town near the German border, made the difficult decision to end her life legally. Despite having a good relationship with her boyfriend of 40 years, to whom she is very attached, and the huge love she has for her two cats, Zoraya was scheduled for euthanasia at the beginning of May because she was fighting her for mental health has exhausted her, according to The Free Press.

In an interview with The Free Press, the young woman confessed: “I’ve always said very firmly that if the situation doesn’t improve, I can’t go any further.”

Her case shows that in the West there is a growing trend of assisted suicide due to serious mental health problems, a departure from the traditional cases where euthanasia was associated with terminal illnesses.

Stef Groenewoud, a health specialist at Kampen Theological University in the Netherlands, expressed concern about this trend. “I see the phenomenon especially in young people with mental disorders, where doctors seem to give up on them more easily than before”said Stef Groenewoud.

Ter Beek’s euthanasia process was meticulously planned. She will be sedated by a doctor before you administer a drug that will stop her heart. Her boyfriend will be with her throughout the procedure, which will take place on the sofa in the living room of her home.

Reflecting on her impending death, Zoraya ter Beek said that despite the fact that it was her choice, she is worried. “I’m a little afraid of dying because it’s a total unknown. We don’t really know what’s next… Or is it nothing? This is the scary partshe said.

The Netherlands has legalized assisted suicide since 2001 and has seen a significant increase in euthanasia cases. In 2022, 8,720 deaths by euthanasia were recorded, representing approximately 5% of the total deaths in the country.

In February, former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt, 93, and his wife died by euthanasia while holding hands.

Ter Beek posted a message on X (Twitter) expressing her gratitude for understanding and those willing to learn from her experiences. He also announced that he will close all his social media accounts before the scheduled euthanasia.
