At least 42 people died in Kenya, following the rupture of a dam, north of the capital, Nairobi, the local governor announced on Monday, April 29, while torrential rains with bloody consequences are taking place in the country, reports AFP.

“Forty-two dead. This is a provisional outline. There are others, trapped in the mud, whom we are making efforts to find,” governor Susan Kihika told AFP.

The dam broke near the town of Mai-Mahiu in the Rift Valley, about 100 kilometers northwest of Nairobi.

The waters took houses and covered road axes on which it is no longer possible to drive.

On Friday, the Kenyan government asked the population to prepare for further and heavier rains and announced a first toll of 76 deaths in floods – since March.

Kenya and much of East Africa are being swept by weeks of seasonal rains – heavier than usual due to the El Niño climate phenomenon.

In 2018, in Nakuru County, where Mai-Mahiu is located, the failure of the Solai dam, due to torrential rains and floods, resulted in 48 deaths.
