If Russia decided to invade NATO space, Romania would be an easy target. The nightmare scenario is based on a report by the Center for European Policy Analysis, published 3 years ago.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops are less than 500 km from Bucharest, and the Russian fleet in the Black Sea has been strengthened in recent months.

The most likely invasion scenario starts from an area of four counties (Vrancea, Galați, Brăila and Buzău), with a length of 85 km and a width of 60 km.

A Romanian opened a discussion in the online environment starting from the dark scenario of a war in our country.

He confessed that he didn’t have a plan, but he wanted to know what other people thought about it.

“Let’s say that in a year, more or less, Russia manages to take Ukraine and prepares to attack Romania. What do you do in that situation?

I don’t have a plan yet, on the one hand I’m thinking of going to the front and showing up for my family and country. Then I come to my senses and realize that I won’t do much if a rifle is handed to me and people tell me “come on, before, it was better before”. Especially in a war full of artillery, drones and guided missiles, I will fight at ’44 standards.

Then there is the option of fleeing the country. If the war starts like it started in Ukraine I may not be able to cross the border, and if I do, I wonder – where do I go?

PS: I realize there’s a slim chance of this happening, but even if it’s 10%, it’s still worth a mental exercise and some sort of plan,” he wrote on Reddit.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that”

The discussion gathered more than 200 comments with various approaches. Some prefer to remain optimistic and do not make bad scenarios. Others jokingly reply.

“I think I’ll probably go into the garden, cover myself with dirt and pretend I’m a carrot until things calm down.”

“Here we are, what shall we do?”

“If Russia ends up entering Moldova, then we can prepare for war. Let’s hope, however, that it won’t come to that.”

“I’m moving my tax residence to Italy”

Some solutions formulated refer to leaving the country.

“I have an apartment bought in Italy, 4 rooms 100 sq m, with a garage. I get on the motorbike and give it gas. I’m moving my tax residence to Italy and I’m living my life. If there’s anything left of the properties and what else I have in Romania, well, if not, life goes on.”

“War does not only involve fighting on the front, especially in defense. So I wouldn’t worry about cannon fodder.

Unfortunately, our army is as riddled with corruption as Russia’s, on the principle that we will not be attacked and that there is a lot of money going around in secret. However, in case of war, no one will send their soldiers to die for us if we run away.

Another problem is that we accept a strange situation. We practically accept the risk of having a war on Romanian territory versus fighting on Ukrainian (or even Russian) territory. We accept that risk because we think it’s tiny, and it is tiny: even if it takes Ukraine, Russia is unlikely to attack us, in fact it’s unlikely to attack anyone without spending 10 years or so getting back on its feet.

It is clear that we rely a lot on a NATO shaken by the Trumpists, but without contributing anything to convince the populations of the respective countries that we deserve to intervene as quickly as possible. And without having a defense plan of our own.”

“Customs will close quickly, don’t think you’ll be able to get out”

Several people dismantle the scenario of leaving the country.

“You have few real options, one of which is that the war would not start.

But if the war were to start here as well, the option is to hide/ fight/ run away from the country if you can.. like stay by customs and leave some time before.

Customs will close quickly, don’t think you’ll be able to get out.”

“I pack my bags and leave. I don’t risk even a finger for the trash from the management. What can I say about life. When I see Ciolacu and the rest of the henchmen from power in line 1, then I will I’m still thinking.”

“Papornița and next. I have nothing to keep me tied to the country, by inheritance let’s fight who escapes.”

“If they call me, I take a deep breath and go. I joined the army 100 years ago, I see what I can do to help. Someone has to do this too. I mean fight for the country, good, bad, as it is.”

“I am looking to get my family out of the country by any means possible and take them somewhere safe. I have not done any tricks if I go to the front and my family members are pulverized to death by some missile (as I have seen before that the Russians used to launch in areas civilians in Ukraine) After that, in that safe place, I have to find some work to support them.

All in all, I hope the scenario of a war with Russia does not happen in my lifetime. I really don’t want to either leave absolutely everything behind and start from scratch abroad, or fail to get my family out of the country and live in fear that they will die (not to mention that I will probably end up me sent to the front depending on how badly the war is going and how deep they want to go into the male civilian population for new recruits).”
