The United States will hold a presidential election later this year that will almost certainly bring Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and Republican candidate Donald Trump face-to-face.
The Republican tycoon has repeatedly said he could end the war with Russia within 24 hours if re-elected president, but has not made clear how he plans to do so. He also said he would not commit to providing Ukraine with defense aid if re-elected.
The Washington Post wrote on April 7, citing multiple sources, that Trump said privately that he could end the war with Russia by pressuring Kiev to make Ukraine cede the Crimean peninsula and the Donbass (eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions) to Moscow. .
Asked if Ukraine might work with Trump if he were re-elected, Zelensky said: “I hope he won’t be against Ukraine. Of course, there are different points of view on some things, including some important details.”
“But if we have common views and common values, then of course we can work” with Trump, the leader from Kiev said.
The elections will be based on the decision of the American people, and Ukraine “will cooperate with any president they (the Americans) choose,” Zelenskiy said.
“And, of course, we will work with the US in any case, because it is our strategic partner and world leader,” the Ukrainian president added.
Zelensky has invited Trump to Ukraine, both publicly and privately, several times to see the situation in the country with his own eyes. According to the Ukrainian leader, Trump refused every time.
