First used by the British Air Force in Afghanistan, the Paveway IV carries a 227 kilogram high-explosive warhead and uses GPS and laser guidance to achieve a high level of accuracy.

The bombs could be launched either by US-made F-16 fighter jets, which are due to arrive in Ukraine in a few months, or by older Soviet-era planes, notes The Telegraph.

Paveway, a state-of-the-art weapon

These are state-of-the-art weapons, being used by the British Air Force including this year, in strikes against Houthi forces in Yemen.

“The Paveway IV offers cockpit-programmable functions for impact angle and direction, as well as burst delay, to achieve specific effects on targets. The Paveway IV bomb represents a significant advance in precision-guided munitions technology,” explains the UK Defense Journal.

The manufacturing company, Raytheon, says on its website that “newer versions of the Paveway bomb are equipped with global positioning capabilities and inertial navigation systems. This innovation combines the precision and flexibility of traditional laser-guided weapons with all-weather GPS guidance capability. The result is a reduction in the number of missions and ammunition stocks, as well as the mission success rate.

Britain increases military aid to 3 billion pounds a year

Britain has been one of Kiev’s most vocal and active supporters, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledging on Tuesday to increase military aid to Ukraine by £500m, bringing the total for this financial year to £3 billions of pounds.

He also said that Britain’s financial support would continue at least at the current level for the rest of the decade, or as long as needed.

Speaking alongside Nato leader Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday, Sunak said Britain would spend an extra £75 billion over the next six years to increase production of munitions and drones, making Britain the the second largest defense investor in NATO.

He said one of the central lessons of the war in Ukraine was that countries needed larger stockpiles of ammunition and the ability to replenish them more quickly.

“In a world that is the most dangerous since the end of the Cold War, we cannot be complacent. As our adversaries align, we must do more to defend our country, interests and values,” Sunak said.
