A deputy of the Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu, Timur Ivanov, was arrested on Tuesday, being accused of acts of corruption, the Russian Investigative Committee announced, writes AFP, taken by News.ro.
“The Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Timur Vladimirovich Ivanov, was arrested. He is suspected of committing a crime according to Section 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code (bribery)”, the Committee announces on Telegram.
The investigative committee did not provide further details.
This type of crime is punishable by a fine or up to ten years in prison, depending on the facts.
Ivanov is targeted by sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU), as a high-ranking official at the Ministry of Defense in charge of building military installations.
The anti-corruption foundation (FBK) founded by late opposition leader Aleksei Navalny published an investigation into Ivanov in 2022. According to the investigation, the Russian deputy defense minister oversaw and profited from construction projects in Mariupol, Ukraine, a city captured by Moscow after a siege of several months.
According to the investigation of the organization – banned in Russia regarding “extremism” -, the minister divorced his wife in order to avoid the sanctions imposed by the EU.
“Today is a beautiful day”, Maria Pevşih, in charge of investigations at the Foundation, reacted on social networks.
Like most opposition figures, Pevsih was forced to go into exile due to the Kremlin’s repression.
Most of the opponents remaining in Russia are in prison.
Russia’s main opposition leader Aleksei Navalny, who galvanized the masses by denouncing corruption during Vladimir Putin’s presidency, died in an Arctic prison in mid-February.
