A double portrait of two women won first place in the ‘Creativity’ category at the Sony World Photography Awards 2023. The image was then exhibited in the competition exhibition alongside the other winners before being withdrawn. How did it get here?

The German artist Boris Eldagsen won, in March, the prize in the Sony World Photography Awards 2023 competition, in the “Creativity” category. His image is a portrait of two women who, in fact, did not exist. The two women were created with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

The German artist drew attention to this aspect on Friday, April 13, at the awards ceremony in London.

Invited to accept the award, he said that his image should not have been accepted into the competition.

“This is a historic moment, this is the first image generated by AI to win a prestigious international photography award,” the German artist began his speech at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony, according to the quoted source.

He stated that by entering the competition he wanted to open a debate about how such images are produced and why they can be dangerous for the field.

AI images and photos should not compete for such an award. They are different. AI is not photography, so I do not accept the award.

German artist Boris Eldagsen:

His photo, withdrawn from the exhibition and from the list of winners

Following the photographer’s announcement, Sony has withdrawn the photo from the winning list and it will likely be removed from the exhibition as well. Later, the artist returned with new explanations on his personal Facebook page.

“I applied like a cheeky monkey to find out if the competitions are ready for AI image filtering. I’m not! We, the world of photographers, need an open discussion. A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what we don’t. Is the photo umbrella large enough to invite AI images in – or would that be a mistake?” Eldagsen wrote.

Eldagsen, who also gives lectures and workshops on the subject, argues that AI is a danger. “Now you can create fake documentary images very quickly.” Such misleading or potentially harmful content is known in the industry as “deepfake”.
