DUBLIN Fire Brigade have issued an urgent warning ahead of the high temperatures set to sizzle Ireland.

Temperatures are set to hit 22C this weekend, promoting the Dublin Fire Brigade to warn the public of the fire hazard associated with reflections.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Dublin Fire Brigade warned that reflections from mirrors and glass onto flammable surfaces can cause fires.

They warned: “Sunny morning in Dublin.

“Just a gentle reminder to remove mirrors, glasses, and vases from window ledges or anywhere they might be exposed to direct sunlight.

“They can cause fires if the sun is reflected onto a flammable surface.”

Where you have a mirror or any other glass object, such as an ornament, that is curved, this allows the glass to act as a lens.

When the sunlight hits it, it becomes concentrated and, if the rays are bounced onto something flammable – like curtains or soft furnishings – then a fire can start.

Temperatures in Dublin are 18C today with sunny, cloudless skies.

The warning comes as Met Eireann have promised a sunny and dry week across the country.

Temperatures have been in the high teens for the last number of days across the country.

The country is set for a mini heatwave this weekend with temperatures rising to the 20s on Friday.

‘Good news’ for Ireland as temperatures continue to rise

Temperatures could soar to 22C on Saturday.

Met Eireann’s Siobhan Ryan advised: “It’s a good news story, really out until the end of the weekend.

“High pressure dominating our weather, lots of dry conditions, light winds and temperatures improving day on day with more in the way of sunshine too.”

She added: “More in the way of sunshine getting through more readily both for Friday, and indeed for Saturday temperatures widely climbing into the low 20s.”

Unfortunately the good news is short lived with a major switch up hitting the country on Sunday.

Siobhan said: “Later this weekend, there are indications that conditions will become more unsettled.”
