AUR Deputy Daniel Gheba declared, on Thursday, that today, May 9, we celebrate a day with a triple significance for us, the Romanians, and for the whole of Europe, a day of reflection and celebration of *unity*, *peace* and *independence* .
“First of all, we mark Europe Day, a symbol of European unity and solidarity. This day commemorates the historic declaration made by Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950, which proposed a plan for economic collaboration between France and Germany, thus laying the foundations of what would become the European Union.
Also, on May 9 we celebrate Romania’s Independence Day, a crucial moment in our history when, in 1877, Mihail Kogălniceanu proclaimed in the Chamber of Deputies: “We are independent, we are an independent nation.” This was a culmination of efforts to throw overboard the last link of Ottoman suzerainty and assert ourselves as a sovereign and independent state.
Finally, May 9 is also Victory Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe and the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. It is a day to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for freedom and peace.
Let us remember these defining moments today and rejoice in the values that unite us. Happy birthday, Europe! Happy birthday, Romania!”, the AUR deputy wrote on Facebook.
