A 53-year-old man, from the town of Țuțcani, was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison, after he set fire to a house, and the fire resulted in the death of one person and the serious injury of another. The facts took place on March 8, 2023, in the town of Bahna and were generated by a debt of 45 lei. According to the criminal prosecution documents, the accused worked for the future victim, and she owed him 45 lei. He kept asking for the money, but because he didn’t get it, he threatened the debtor to set his house on fire.
As he did not receive any positive signal, on the same day he came to the neighbor’s house with a can of combustible liquid and set fire to the building where there were two men, one 73 years old and the other 51 years old. The fire spread very quickly, and the two could not get out, being pulled out by some neighbors. Later, the firefighters were also requested to put out the fire. The fire consumed 170 square meters of the roof of the building and several goods inside.
The two victims were taken to the Roman Hospital, later one of them, who suffered deep burns, was transferred to a clinic in Iasi. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, the man died on March 18. The coroners determined that the death was due to third and fourth degree burns on 10% of the body surface.
The accused was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and destruction by arson, and the court of first instance, the Neamț Court, sentenced him to 12 years in prison, plus the payment of compensation of 7,000 euros to the victims’ family and 82,143 lei to the clinic Iesănea where the victim who died was hospitalized. The sentence was appealed by the accused at the Bacău Court of Appeal, and recently the sentence was reduced to 10 years and 8 months of imprisonment with execution, the amount of the damages being preserved.
