The bills for natural gas and electricity decreased in April compared to the maximum capped prices, the Ministry of Energy announced on Wednesday, May 8.

Thus, for gas, the price decreased by 25 percent, and for electricity, by 15 percent.

“The first bills for gas and electricity were issued in April. Compared to the maximum price stipulated by the ceiling, the invoiced prices for natural gas are up to 25% lower. For example, the price charged by the main natural gas supplier to consumers households is 0.23381 lei/kWh (the maximum capped price is 0.310 lei/kWh)”, the institution’s press release states.

Also, for electricity, for household customers with a consumption higher than 300 kWh/month, the reductions applied by the main suppliers reach up to 15% compared to the maximum price of 1.3 lei/kWh.

“I promised lower bills for electricity and natural gas. I remind you that on March 28, after the Government meeting, I publicly declared that Romanians will receive lower bills for energy. I firmly and well-founded supported it based on the analyzes that we did and which we promoted by updating the compensation-ceiling mechanism (EOG 27/2022). What was certain for me since the promotion of the new mechanism in the Government. I have always supported it “The state must intervene where it is necessary, when it is necessary and how it is necessary. There is no need to overturn an entire system, but to calculate, analyze and apply it head on. We will continue to protect Romanians’ bills,” he declared Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Energy, in the quoted statement.

The government adopted, on March 28, amendments to GEO 27/2022, which eliminated the sun tax for prosumers and updated the support scheme for all electricity and natural gas consumers. Thus, these changes will lead to a decrease in the price at which producers sell without being overtaxed from 450 lei/MWh to 400 lei/MWh for electricity, respectively from 150 lei/MWh to 120 lei/MWh for natural gas.

Burduja reminded that Romanians pay among the lowest prices in the European Union for electricity and natural gas, as it appears from Eurostat data.

According to the data published on April 25 by the Statistical Office of the European Union, the price of natural gas for households in Romania (0.0563 euro/kWh) was the 3rd lowest price in the EU and half the average price recorded in Union level (0.1125 euro/kWh). At the same time, for electricity, the price paid in Romania (0.1782 euro/kWh) was the fifth lowest price in the EU and far below the European average (0.2847 euro/kWh).

The three countries with the lowest natural gas prices for domestic consumers in the EU, in the second half of 2023, were Hungary, Croatia and Romania. For EU households, electricity prices in the second half of 2023 were the lowest in Hungary, Bulgaria, Malta, Croatia and Romania.
