Niculina Mocanu

CONDOLENCES… The death of a Romanian woman who worked in Italy, because she could no longer fit in Romania, is no longer news for newspapers or television, even if she worked in Sicily, in Trapani, the nest of the mafia. But we are writing this obituary because our Romanian is the mother and mother-in-law of two colleagues from Redacția Vremea Nouă: Simona Danda and Flavius Ghiorghieș. It is the story of a Vasluience who made her own destiny, like many others who chose to work in another country to give their children a chosen education and bread on the table. I said that she didn’t fit in Romania anymore, because she didn’t want to give up to work for the state, and in private no one wanted her anymore, after the waves of layoffs that crushed the local economy. He went to distant Sicily. In the north of Italy you couldn’t find jobs for a long time. He had belatedly decided to try his luck in Italy. He did his job responsibly and worked in that area for 17 years. She was loved and appreciated by Italians. 17 years is like a human life. In August he was supposed to retire and come home, but he never got around to it. She had a heart attack and her dream of having a quiet life in Romania, with her children, was shattered. Niculina Mocanu died on April 27, 2024, a Saturday. Nothing predicted this tragedy. She was in town with her Romanian friends from Trapani, after coming from work in a nursing home. They had agreed to meet the next day to go to church, but he never answered the phone. They went to her apartment on Sunday morning, where she lived with another woman and the door to the room was locked. There was no answer from beyond. Her friends broke down the door and entered. They found Niculina with the blanket over her head, a sign that she died in her sleep. The coroner came who confirmed the death, the carabinieri who made checks to make sure it wasn’t a violent death and that’s it! Niculina’s adventure in Sicily is over. Our colleague from the editorial office was called, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., by her mother’s friends, to tell her about the tragedy.

The torment of some children, who wanted their mother home and were counting the days until her retirement

We, the editors, met Niculina Mocanu only once. On New Year’s Eve, this year he was in our newsroom to see the fireworks. She was very proud because she was accompanied by her dear children. He also told us that he is coming home and is expecting a grandchild from our colleague. But it was not to be. The news of her death took us all by surprise. She was only 59 years old and we knew her with iron health. But it wasn’t like that. Flavius and Simona immediately left for Sicily. They were there on Monday at 12:00, and her son had arrived in Romania, from London where he was working, to dig the grave of his beloved mother. Also on Monday, from Iași, a hearse took the road to Italy to repatriate our Vasluian woman. It arrived in Romania on Saturday evening and was deposited in the chapel of the “St. Neculai” from Vaslui (next to the former military unit). She will be buried today and the service will start at 12:00. She will be buried at Eternitatea Cemetery.

The Vremea Nouă editorial team is with the family of Simona Danda

The suffering of losing one’s mother is immeasurable, amplified also from the perspective of the fact that no one expected such an outcome. We all owe a death, but in Niculina’s case it was too soon. But the drama of this vasluience, who left home for a cause, impressed us a lot. Empathy may have come because I knew her from Simone’s stories, but you can’t remain stone-faced when you hear such a story. When you see how a dream is broken, how a woman who fought for a better life ends up a simple bandante, who doesn’t have to live long after she retires, lest she enjoy the privileges of the Italian state as a pensioner. And this is where our revolt starts. He worked for 17 years in Trapani, because he couldn’t find his place in Vaslui, just to have a quiet life in his old age. But it was not to be. The one above had other calculations with Niculina. There she belonged to no one, only to a small group of united Romanian women, who socialized and came together forced not to lose their identity. And the proof that they formed a united group was seen when Simona and Flavius arrived in Sicily. Niculia was in a chapel, watched over by her mother’s colleagues. The women also collected a large amount of money to repatriate Niculina, about half of the costs of such an operation. They did it not out of obligation, but out of necessity. They knew that Niculina wished not to be buried in Italy. He told them, as long as he was alive, that he did not understand why there was no cemetery in Italy, without a Romanian not being buried there. She did not conceive under any circumstances that she or other Romanians should be buried in a land other than that of their country, nor should they be burned in a crematorium.

The last way, only through Orthodox lands

The road from Italy took almost 3 days and had a strange route. From Sicily, the car with the deceased’s coffin boarded the ferry and arrived in southern Greece. After crossing all of Hellas, he then arrived in Bulgaria and entered the country via Giurgiu. He thus crossed Oltenia and also passed very close to the place where he was born. Because it must be said that Niculina is not from Vaslui. He arrived here after his marriage. He grew up in a village in Olt county. The route was not established by the family, that’s what those who repatriated Niculina decided. Here, then, is how a sad story ended of a vasluience adopted in our county, who lived her dream of securing a future for her children, but who ends tragically, paying the ultimate price, because she dared to wish for more than our country could offer him. May God forgive Niculina because her life was not in vain on earth! He left behind strong shoots, who tested their strength and character, bringing their mother in the shortest time from Sicily, where few have the courage to repatriate the deceased. He will go to eternal rest in Romanian land, as he wanted…
