On Saturday night there was an accident right at the White House, as a result of which a man died on the spot.
Accident at the White House
Local police announced that on Saturday, a vehicle crashed violently into the gate of the White House in Washington DC. The driver, a man, was found dead.
Police received a call at 10:46 p.m. local time on Saturday evening reporting an accident.
“An adult man is pronounced dead at the scene,” the police announced on their account X (formerly Twitter). “The vehicle crashed into a security barrier around the White House complex,” they said.
In a statement, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the US Secret Service, said the vehicle was traveling “at a high rate of speed” at the time of the accident.
No threat detected
Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the US Secret Service, also stated that “no threat was detected” directed at the residence of US President Joe Biden.
“Safety protocols were put in place while (police) officers extricated the vehicle and attempted to rescue the driver, who was found deceased,” the spokesman said.
An investigation has been opened, which will be led by the Secret Service and, in the case of the fatal accident, by the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. The identity of the deceased man has not yet been established, and the reasons for the accident remain unknown.
In January, the driver of a car was arrested for also hitting a security perimeter fence.
In recent years, the White House has been targeted by several intrusion attempts, which led the security services to decide in 2020 to build a new barrier, higher and made of a more resistant metal around the perimeter of the presidential residence.
In 2017, an individual jumped the compound’s fence and walked onto the grounds for more than 16 minutes before being captured while then-President Donald Trump was inside the building.
