According to the Orthodox calendar, on May 6, 2024 we celebrate the second day of Easter. Also today begins the Illuminated Week.
It is said that in ancient times, Baptism was performed on Easter night. The baptized were called “enlightened” and wore white clothes throughout the week after Easter.
The Church calls this week Illuminated Week and calls us to carry within us the light of Christ’s Resurrection and in this light to embrace one another, forgive and make peace.
Even today, the church honors Saint and Righteous Job, the long-suffering and Saint Barbarian Martyr.

On the second day of Easter, Finns visit their godparents with a Easter basket, red eggs, cake, wine and other traditional dishes. This custom is specific to the day, having a spiritual importance for believers.

Traditions and customs observed on the second day of Easter
- From the Lord’s Resurrection until Pentecost, there are no prayers, only worship.
- Starting from Holy Easter Sunday and until the Ascension of the Lord, the Easter Axion is sung at the Liturgy: “The angel cried”, and the faithful greet each other with the following words: “Christ is risen!” and I answer: “Truly he has risen!”.
- The funeral services during Holy Week are performed according to a special order, being replaced by the Resurrection Service, which speaks of the victory of Life over death.
- There are no weddings on the second day of Easter.
- We are not allowed to sweep on this day.
- It is not sewn in any way and it is not spun on the second day of Easter.
- Do not wash on Bright Monday, as it is a great sin.

What do we do with the candle from the service of the Resurrection of the Lord
The candle from the service of the Resurrection of the Lord is used in a special order, since ancient times. Even if we encounter all kinds of superstitions, we must know that it is not extinguished on the threshold of the house or on the beam, nor is it used to smoke the cattle in the households, nor is it used for fortune-telling.
It is said that the candle used at the Resurrection should not be thrown away, nor should it be kept next to other candles used in the church. The one with which I received light is taken home and burned a little at a time throughout the illuminated week. If this is not possible, it can be lit at the place intended for lighting candles at the church or at the graves of loved ones.
Some believers, with the consent of the priest, keep a part of this candle to light it in moments of trial, danger, illness – reminding us that Christ has overcome them all, giving us the hope of joy, according to doxologia.ro.
