Why do petrol or diesel prices go up or down at the pump?

Fuel prices at filling stations have a similar evolution to that of Platts international quotations for petrol and diesel, but with a difference of several days, the Competition Council found following a study that re-analyses how changes in quotations that are transmitted in prices at pump.

The Platts quote is an international reference price in the gasoline or diesel market and represents a value reflected by demand, supply and transactions between traders in the wholesale fuel market. Platts quotes are not public data, and in the long term tend to follow the same trend as oil barrel prices.

Therefore, when the Platts international quotations for gasoline and diesel increase, the pump price of fuels in Romania also increases, and when the quotations decrease, their price at gas stations decreases.

Most of the price adjustment at the pump occurs within a week, both on the rise and fall of the international benchmark Platt quote.
