Composer, conductor and university professor Gheorghe Mustea, full member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, celebrates his birthday today, writes Moldpres.md

He was born on May 1, 1951, in Mândrești, Telenesti. He studied at the “Ștefan Neaga” Secondary Music School in Chisinau (1966-1970), at the “Gavriil Musicescu” Arts Institute in Chisinau (1970-1975, 1975-1980). He followed an internship in the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Philharmonic “D. Shostakovich” from Saint-Petersburg (1984-1986).

He was a flautist and naist (1969-1970), musical director and conductor of the “Joc” Folk Dance Ensemble Orchestra (1975-1978), a teacher at the “Ștefan Neaga” Secondary School of Music (1973-1975, 1978-1980), conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Moldova (1983-1989). He is the founder, first conductor and artistic director (since 1989) of the National Symphony Orchestra of the State Company “Teleradio-Moldova”. During the years 1999-2002 he held the position of rector and university professor of the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts in Chisinau.

Gheorghe Mustea composed symphonic music, opera music, music for soloists, choir and orchestra, instrumental chamber music, choral, in folk style (for folk music orchestra, voice and orchestra of folk instruments, folk instruments solo and orchestra), stage, for children (instrumental, vocal and choral), for film, for theater. Edited works: “Concerto for orchestra no. 1”, the opera “Stephen the Great”, “Ballad of Moldavia”, “In the middle of the night when I startle”, “Ciocârlia”, “The Shepherd and the ewe”, “Three great loves”, “Longing”, “Moldova, dear homeland” , “To the Bessarabians”, “Longing”, “Light up the stars”, “What silence descends from the heavens”, etc.

He has more than 1400 concerts in the country and abroad with various musical-artistic collectives from the country and abroad. Annual tours with the National Symphony Orchestra of the State Company “Teleradio-Moldova” and with other symphony orchestras in: Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, South Korea, etc. He recorded at Radio Chisinau works by: GF Handel, G. Verdi, CM Weber, PI Tchaikovsky, WA Mozart, J. Strauss, G. Enescu and others. He is president of the Chisinau Musical Society.

In 1980, Gheorghe Mustea became a laureate of the Moscow Composition Competition, presenting the Concerto for Orchestra no. 1, and in 1990 – laureate of the State Prize for the opera with a historical subject “A. Lăpușneanu”. He is People’s Artist, holder of the “Order of the Republic”, university professor at the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts. In 2013 he was awarded the National Award. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (2008) and Doctor Honoris Causa of the State University “Alecu Russo” from Balti (2017).
