The first ecological cemetery in the country will be built in Brașov. In an area where there are three other cemeteries, a private investor submitted to the Brașov City Hall a request for approval of an ecological cemetery, on Zizinului street, as well as a mortuary chapel and the related fence.

The cemetery will be quite large, it will be laid out on a strip with an area of 10,000 square meters, located behind one of the cemeteries in the Micșunica area (the first one from the Energetic High School). According to the documents submitted by the investors, the chapel is to be made of wood.

Unlike regular cemeteries, in ecological ones the coffins deposited cannot contain non-biodegradable elements. In ecological cemeteries, coffins must be biodegradable and made of recycled materials. In this kind of cemeteries, most of the time the places are not for sale, but are rented for a duration of 25 years, which is how long experts estimate that the decomposition of the body takes.

Deposited ballot boxes will also be biodegradable

The urns in which the ashes of those who prefer to be cremated after death must “melt”, that is, they must also be biodegradable. But not only the parts that are buried must be made of ecological materials, but also what remains on the surface.

Ecological cemeteries are inspired by oriental culture, from the Far East. It is known that in countries such as China or Japan, most deceased people are cremated. On the other hand, representatives of these civilizations seek to preserve the environment by planting and preserving trees, plants and flowers to perpetuate life.

Biodegradable urns are increasingly being used in the Far East. The idea is that matter transforms and so the mortal remains of the urn coexist with a pine seed that begins to develop and thus the tree is formed. The name of this urn is Bios, and the starting point is the natural cycle and the possibility of death becoming new life.

No conifers in the cemetery

The first ecological cemetery in the world appeared, however, in Belgium, and only wooden benches and signs are installed on its territory. There, to honor the memory of the deceased, relatives and friends can hang a birdhouse with the person’s name on one of the trees that grow near the grave.

In the cemetery, there are no evergreen trees such as firs. They were intentionally not planted, to show the cyclical nature of time. In Brașov, the funerary monuments will be as small as possible, and the benches here will be made only of wood.

The concept of the ecological cemetery appeared in Europe more than 10 years ago. Among other things, in such a cemetery, dead bodies are buried in coffins made of biodegradable materials, and the graves are small. The urns (made of biodegradable materials) of those who were cremated are also deposited in such cemeteries.
