The leader of AUR, George Simion, was complained, by independent MEP Nicu Ştefănuţă, to the National Council for Combating Discrimination (CNCD) for “xenophobic and discriminatory” statements made at the “Make Europe Great Again” conference.

“The political speech in which an ethnic group is taken as a tool of mockery, of humiliation, is a dangerous one because it encourages the speech of hate, discrimination and racism”, says Ştefănuţă, who is one of the 4 independent candidates for the European Parliament and the only “green”.

“The MEP Nicu Ştefănuţă notified the National Council for Combating Discrimination today following another xenophobic and discriminatory slip by the AUR leader, George Simion. According to media reports, present at a conference on Europe, George Simion criticized Marcel Ciolacu’s unfortunate speech “We all laughed. No one said that the prime minister was a joke. He is probably Roma”. among the few ideas promoted by the US Embassy and the European Commission about Romania is the one according to which we would be savages because we claim that babies are born from the love between a man and a woman”, according to a press release sent on Monday , April 29, by MEP.

He adds that this “is not the first slip-up of this kind, when George Simion uses the Roma ethnicity for jokes aimed at humiliating political opponents”.

“On April 8, 2024, on the International Day of the Roma, he insinuated that the only foreign language that Marcel Ciolacu would speak is the Roma language. The political discourse in which an ethnicity is taken as an instrument of mockery, of humiliation, is a dangerous one because it encourages hate speech, discrimination and racism. For Romania, a country that practiced Romani slavery for five centuries, this subject is not only delicate, it is an open wound in Romania’s history that has not yet been healed,” he says Stefanuta.

According to the MEP, through the second statement, Simion “had an obviously homophobic speech, as the message sent is not one of biological nature or for the propagation of the human species, but one against the LGBTQ community. This community becomes inferior or even deprived of rights under the pretext invoked within the aforementioned discourse, and fundamental rights must be recognized by all”.

That’s why any Romanian politician who claims to be European must report when there are such slips, believes Ştefănuţă.

“AUR is a danger to society, because they only sow hatred. George Simion, through his xenophobic jokes, encourages hate speech and discrimination. Not only is a speech that targets an ethnicity not acceptable, but it is unfair to the Roma for what they have endured in Romania, to be treated with contempt. Unfortunately, in European Romania, the political class has done too little for the Roma, implicitly to combat discrimination and racism. As for the LGBTQ+ community, it is always the target of those attacks from the AUR, and we must not forget that this community needs the support of all politicians, because we must have equal rights, regardless of ethnicity, sex, gender. That is why the AUR leader shows us that it can be even worse, from this reason he must answer for the statements made”, declared the independent MEP Nicu Ştefănuţă.

Nicu Ştefănuţă, vice-president of the Greens Group in the European Parliament, is the first Romanian MEP affiliated to the political group of the Greens in the European Parliament (Greens/EFA) and is currently a member of the Budget Committee and the Public Health Subcommittee.

At the same time, the Sibiu MEP acts as a substitute member in the Commission for Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), in the Commission for Transport and Tourism (TRAN) and is part of the Parliament’s delegation for EU Relations with Moldova as well as the Parliament’s Delegation for relations with NATO.
