About the original script vs. screenplay, screenwriter vs. director/author, at “CineSens” with Magdalena Stanciu

Magdalena Stanciu’s guests in the third edition of the show “CineSens”, broadcast on Friday April 26, from 10 p.m., on TVR Cultural, are screenwriter Oana Răsuceanu and directors Stere Gulea, Marian Crișan and Alexandru Maftei. The discussion will be followed by the screening of the film “Family” (1976), directed by Dan Adrian Marcoci.

For film production enthusiasts, TVR Cultural has prepared a series of debates containing topics from the film industry. “CineSens”, a project made with the support of UNATC, means a series of shows, broadcast every Friday, from 10 p.m., in which the moderator Magdalena Stanciu gives you a meeting with specialists from the world of cinema, involved in the production process, but also training of future professionals.

On Friday, April 26, from 10 p.m., screenwriter Oana Răsuceanu and directors Stere Gulea, Marian Crișan and Alexandru Maftei, directors and screenwriters from different generations, graduates of UNATC, will discuss the essential link between script and direction in making a successful film .

STERE GULEA graduated from the “IL Caragiale” Theater and Cinematographic Art Institute, Bucharest, “Theatrology-Filmology” section in 1970. After graduation, he worked as an editor at the Bucharest Cinematography Studio. Between 1990-1996 he was also dean of the Faculty of Cinema within ATF, he led the Romanian Television from the position of interim general director, in the period 1996-1998. He was a film teacher between 1990-2015 at ATF, and from 2001 at UNATC. He began his career as an assistant director on Beyond the Sands (1974) and The Prodigal Father (1974). Then came The Green Grass of Home, Carpathian Castle and Bear’s Eye. In 1987, Stere Gulea signed the script and direction for the adaptation based on the first volume of the homonymous novel by Marin Preda, Moromeții. A remarkable screening that is still appreciated today. In 2006, 20 years after the making of the film, the DVD with the film Moromeții was released. After the 90s, he returned to the public’s attention with Piața Universității – Romania (documentary, 1991) – together with Vivi Drăgan Vasile and Sorin Ilieșiu. In 2018, he signs the screenplay of his second novel Moromeții 2. The director Stere Gulea was awarded the national Order “Star of Romania” in the rank of Commander (December 1, 2000) “for outstanding artistic achievements and for the promotion of culture

MARIAN CRISțAN is a director and screenwriter, graduated in 1999 from the University of Theater and Cinematography, Department of Directing. In 2008, he became known to the public through the short film Megatron, a film that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He made his feature film debut with the film Morgen, 2010, for which he won the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno International Festival, as well as the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the International Federation of Film Societies Prize. In 2015, he screened the short story Moara cu noroc by Ioan Slavici as Horizon, a free adaptation.

ALEXANDRU MAFTEI is a director and screenwriter, graduated from the Academy of Theater and Film in Bucharest, film and TV directing section, in 1994. His undergraduate film, “Every day is night”, was selected at numerous international festivals, awarded and broadcast by the Arte television station. Since 1992 he has worked in some of the most important advertising agencies as a creative person alongside British and Italian creatives. In 1997, he signed his first feature film, the Romanian-German co-production “Fii cu ochi pe felice”, for which he was also a co-writer. Since the 90s, he has directed hundreds of TV commercials, including many internationally awarded ones. He won the big Studio Drum prize in Portoroz in 2005. A year later, he wrote and directed a medium-length television film about Stephen the Great and Saint presented in the Mari Romanians show on National Television. Ștefan cel Mare was voted the greatest Romanian by the viewers. In 2009, he completed the fiction feature film, the comedy “Buna! What are you doing?” , which enjoys success, an intense festival life and receives countless international awards. In 2011, work began on the screen adaptation of the short story “Miss Christina” by Mircea Eliade, a faithful adaptation of the text, the first Romanian fantasy film after ’89. In 2017, he defended his doctoral thesis in Visual Arts at the National University of Arts – “The metamorphosis of the narrative scenario towards a filmic visuality”. Since 2018, he is a university lecturer at the Film Faculty of UNATC ILCaragiale in Bucharest.

OANA RĂSUCEANU is a screenwriter, dramatist and theater director, graduated from the National University of Theater and Cinematography “IL Caragiale” – Faculty of Film, Audio-Visual Communication section (screenwriting and film criticism) and SNSPA – Faculty of Public Relations and Communication David Ogilvy in 2006. He graduated with a master’s degree in Choreographic Art at UNATC in 2007. He is the co-writer of the short films “Sa mori de dragoste ranita”, “Buna Cristina! Pa Cristina!”, “Friday around 11”, “Tabasco” and “Skugos”, the medium-length film “Captivi de Craciun” and the long films “Love Building”, “Alt Love Building” and “Breaking News” (in pre-production). He became a PhD student and university assistant at UNATC, where he teaches Screenwriting. He is also a trainer of several education programs through theater and film, dedicated to young people or professionals in the field, cultural manager and founding member of the Control N Cultural Association.

The discussion will be followed by the screening of the film Familia (1976), directed by Dan Adrian Marcoci. Graduated from the Institute of Theatrical and Cinematographic Art “ILCaragiale”, class 1976. He worked at the Bucharest Studio as an assistant and also directed utility short films.

CineSens, a project carried out with the support of UNATC, means a series of shows, broadcast every Friday, from 10:00 p.m., in which the moderator Magdalena Stanciu gives you a meeting with specialists from the world of cinematography, involved in the production process but also in the training of future professionals.

The project aims to promote short films or documentaries made by UNATC students that will be broadcast, from Monday to Friday, at 21:45, UNATC SEQUENCES, as a result of the partnership between the two institutions.
