A cargo plane crashed on Tuesday in Alaska, with two people on board, who probably died, the American authorities announced, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

The accident took place around 10 o’clock in the morning near the airport in Fairbanks, a city in the center of this state located in the extreme northwest of the American continent, the Alaska police explained in a statement.

The plane had “two people on board” and crashed “into the Tanana River” less than ten minutes after takeoff.

“The plane went down a steep hill on the river bank, where it caught fire. No survivors were found”, said the police.

A photo of the crash provided by authorities shows burning trees on the edge of an ice-covered river, in the middle of which the wreckage of the plane is barely discernible.

The plane was a Douglas DC-4. Created during the Second World War, this model has not been produced for more than thirty years and is currently used mainly for the transport of goods.

The plane was flying to transport fuel, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed. This government agency has opened an investigation.
