Sorin Mateescu (AUR): A low percentage of recycled waste is observed in Romania, especially in rural areas, which is alarming

--

AUR Senator Sorin Mateescu addressed a question to the Minister of Labor regarding waste collection.

A low percentage of recycled waste is observed in Romania, especially in rural areas, which is alarming. More than 80% of all waste ends up in landfills, while the rest is sent to recycling facilities. This situation shows an insufficient effort in the promotion and implementation of sustainable waste management practices, especially in the rural environment. In accordance with the normative acts in force, the local public administration authorities had the obligation to organize the separate collection and recycling at the source of bio-waste until 31 December 2023, and to ensure that hazardous waste is treated under appropriate conditions and that does not contaminate other municipal waste streams. At the same time, according to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the construction and commissioning of 26 waste recycling facilities is foreseen by June 30, 2026, with a financial allocation of 220 million euros, says Mateescu.

SORIN MATEESCU’S QUESTIONS:

1. What is the progress achieved so far in terms of the implementation of separate waste collection in rural areas?

2. What measures are taken to ensure that hazardous waste is properly treated and does not contaminate other waste streams in rural areas?

3. Are there concrete plans to expand recycling infrastructure in rural areas and to raise awareness among rural communities about the importance of recycling?

4. How are local public administration authorities involved in promoting and implementing sustainable waste management practices in rural communities?

5. What are the financial and logistical resources available to build the necessary infrastructure for rural recycling and to educate and train local communities in this regard?
