The Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, declared on Tuesday that Romania’s progress in combating illegal migration is recognized by everyone, specifying that, on the border with Serbia, illegal migration is zero. He added that he wants to reach this performance on all borders.

Cătălin Predoiu met, on Tuesday, in Vienna, with his Austrian counterpart, Gerhard Karner.

“Today I had a working meeting as a minister of a Schengen member state with air and sea borders. Romania is a Schengen member state. I am happy for the citizens who will benefit from this new status. It is a status well deserved by the Romanian citizens, well deserved by Romania. We have worked and invested a lot for this accession to the Schengen Area. We raised the level of border protection. We have invested hundreds of millions of euros in border security. That’s why I’m glad that our work over the last nine months, together with the European Commission, Commissioner Johansson, Vice-President Schinas, the former Spanish Presidency and fellow ministers in the JAI Council, has yielded results. And here we are today at an important moment when we can hear these announcements in the Schengen Area”, said Cătălin Predoiu.

He stated that Romania’s progress in the matter of illegal migration is recognized all over the world.

“It is a milestone moment for us. We want and we will make this journey together to the end. But for this we all have to work and that is what we discussed today, how to work better to make this road to the end. Romania’s progress in combating illegal migration is today recognized by everyone. We have pilot projects with all neighboring countries. For example, on the border with Serbia, migration is practically illegal, it is practically zero. My logic and that of my colleagues from the Ministry of Internal Affairs is to raise this performance on all borders. We will supplement the forces in the border police and continue the investments. We will continue the good collaboration with Austria and all other member states and the Commission for improving the framework for migration and asylum, developing efforts on the external dimension of migration and bilateral and multilateral police cooperation against cross-border crime”, said the Minister of Internal Affairs.
