Vlad Pascu was sent to court, in October, for culpable homicide, culpable bodily injury, leaving the scene of the accident and driving a vehicle under the influence of psychoactive substances, and at the deadline of March 14, Vlad Pascu’s request for trial in simplified procedure, by which the penalty is reduced by one third. On April 4, a new term would take place in the substantive case of Vlad Pascu, from the Mangalia Court. The lawyer of the family of one of Vlad Pascu’s victims stated that at the deadline of April 4, the request to change the legal classification – which is now manslaughter – to qualified murder will be discussed.

The first term in Vlad Pascu’s trial had been set for February 22, at 9:00 a.m., at the Mangalia Court. The file was postponed until 12:30 p.m. because Pascu also had a deadline at the Constanța Court, in order to avoid preventive detention, but that request was rejected.

When the trial resumed, the judge in the file found that Vlad Pascu had no defense because one of the lawyers withdrew from the file, and the other mentioned that he was protesting, being in solidarity with the action initiated by the Bucharest Bar and requested that the next term be granted after 29 February.

Controversies during Vlad Pascu’s trial

The judge ordered the next term to take place on March 14 and issued an address to the Constanța Bar Association, in order to appoint an ex officio defender for Vlad Pascu, for the entire duration of the trial.

The judge appointed to judge this case is Ioana Ancuța Popoviciu. The parents of the victims of the accident caused by Vlad Pascu were dissatisfied with the attitude she had in the courtroom. Thus, they told the journalists that when she entered the hall she would have been chewing gum. Later, the judge asked for the bulletin of the young man who died in the road accident that she did not know had died.

The Superior Council of the Magistracy announced that the Judicial Inspection has notified the case of judge Ioana Ancuța Popoviciu. “The notification is based on the aspects that appeared in the mass media during the days of February 22 and 23, 2024, regarding the manner in which the court session was held in a criminal case pending before the Mangalia Court with a trial date of February 22, 2024 , with reference to the judge’s obligation to study the files prior to the court hearing, the manner of managing the files and court hearings, as well as the verification of any possible incompatibility situations in which the judge charged with resolving the case could have found himself”. stated the CSM.

The second court term took place on March 14. The father of the young woman killed in the accident caused by Vlad Pascu expressed his displeasure because Vlad Pascu was not brought to that deadline. “Do you see Vlad Pascu brought here? Not. There is a gate to avoid being brought in, take advantage of it and that’s enough. If it were me, God forbid, in his place, they would take me by the back of the head, put handcuffs on me and bring me here to be judged. Discretionary”, he commented.

The father of the young man killed in the accident went to the courtroom with his son’s photo and despite all this, the judge asked him who he was. The lawyer Adrian Cuculis, who represents the family of the young woman who died, declared, upon leaving the courtroom, that his request to change the legal status was not debated at this term. “If we all had a block meeting to change the administrator, it would have turned out better. The problem is as follows. We are talking about a request that has been submitted since the Prosecutor’s Office and it has not been debated even today. The judge accepted the abbreviated, i.e. simplified, procedure for him, i.e. to obtain a reduction of the sentence by one third before debating the request to change the legal classification”. said Cuculis.
