The deposit in Rovina was identified in 1973 and researched in the following decades by Romanian geologists from IPEG – Geological prospecting and exploitation enterprise from Deva.
By the year 2000, the reserve volume of the deposit was outlined, and five years later, a company obtained the exploration license in the mining perimeter Rovina – Colnic – Valea Gârzii. We are talking about 180 tons of gold worth 12 billion euros!
“By carrying out 20,000 meters of drilling, three deposits were outlined, which could be exploited in the quarry (Rovina and Colnic) or underground (Cireșata). Resources have been estimated totaling over 130 million tons, from which, within about 20 years, 100 tons of gold and 200,000 tons of copper could be obtained”mentioned the engineer Grigorie Verdeș, in the volume “Ecstasy and agony in the Zărăndean mining”.
The Rovina project was contested by several environmental organizations, which obtained, at the end of 2022, the suspension in court of the environmental opinion necessary for the elaboration of the Zonal Urbanistic Plan of the future industrial area on the Rovina Valley.
Rovina is 5 km from Brad and 25 km from Deva. Roșia Montană is 25 km north and Certej 17 km southeast of the Rovina license perimeter.
