The Romanian Olympic Movement celebrated on Wednesday 110 years since the establishment of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. The event took place in the Sports Museum in the Olympic House and was honored by Olympic champions, members of the COSR General Assembly and personalities of Olympic life.

Mihai Covaliu together with COSR general secretary George Boroi and FR Athletics president Anişoara Cuşmir-Stanciu placed the necklace around the neck of the Olympic champion athlete in the long jump, in Mexico City 1968. Viorica Viscopoleanu won the Olympic gold establishing then, from one attempt, a new world and Olympic record (6.82 m).

She participated in three editions of the Olympic Games: Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972, she is the European champion in the long jump in 1970 and has 5 medals in her record: 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the indoor EC.

“I am deeply moved and thank you for this award. I want to wish success to those who will compete for Romania in the summer in Paris, to leave their emotions at the stadium gate or at the hall door. An Olympic victory is unique and worth fighting with all your being for it!” said Viorica Viscopoleanu.

The president of COSR, Mihai Covaliu, together with Elisabeta Lipă and Marius Urzică put the Golden Necklace around Dan Grecu’s neck. The first world champion in Romanian gymnastics, Olympic bronze medalist in rings in Montreal 1976 and the vocational coach who led the men’s gymnastics team on all the podiums in the world received the decoration with tears in his eyes.

“Gymnastics was my life, I lived as an athlete to win and as a coach to create teams. I am grateful to those who supported me in my career, my family and the athletes because they understood that work beats talent. For me, who has been to 9 editions of the Olympic Games as an athlete, coach and referee, I can say that this moment brought an enormous emotion because it is an award offered by the Olympic Family that I respected through my performances! Thank you!” said Dan Grecu, after receiving the award.

Dan Grecu participated in 3 editions of the Olympic Games: Munich 1972, Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980. He won bronze in rings at the Montreal 1976 Olympics, he is the first world champion in the history of Romanian gymnastics (Varna 1974) and the first Romanian gymnast to win a medal at the European Games ( Bern 1975).

He has 3 medals in his record: 1 gold – 1 silver – 1 bronze at the world championships and 2 European medals: 1 gold and 1 silver. The Romanian team coordinated by coach Dan Grecu won Olympic bronze in 2004, world bronze in 1995 and European gold in 2002 and 2004.

During the event, the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics launched the NFT “COSR 110”, an extension of the project that COSR is developing with ICI.

In its 110 years of existence, Romanian athletes have won 309 Olympic medals: 90 gold, 97 silver and 122 bronze.
